About Four Strokes

Swim Practice in One Box

Four Strokes was born on a pool deck.

During one season, my swimmers kept telling me the same thing: practice had too much yardage, and they wanted training to feel more exciting. As their coach, I still needed them to put in the work, but I also wanted them to enjoy competing, stay engaged, and take ownership of every set.

So we decided to turn practice into a game.

The first version of Four Strokes was very different from the one you see today. We printed simple black-and-white cards, laminated them ourselves, and drew numbers and swimming instructions on blank white dice. We did not even have all the rules yet. We created and adjusted them as we played, learning what made each race more competitive, unpredictable, and fun.

We divided the swimmers into teams and let them choose the challenges they believed they could dominate: sprint, endurance, relay, technique, or hypoxic work. The dice determined the details of each set, and then the teams raced head-to-head.

The results surprised me.

Instead of simply completing the yardage, the swimmers attacked every race. Streamlines became tighter. Underwaters became more powerful. Turns became sharper. Teammates encouraged one another, discussed strategy, and fought for every point. They were working just as hard, often harder, but now the effort felt like play.

Every practice helped us improve the game. We tested new challenges, changed the rules, removed what did not work, and kept the moments that made swimmers excited to race again.

What began with homemade laminated cards and hand-drawn dice eventually grew into Four Strokes: a complete game created specifically for competitive swimmers.

Today, the box includes engraved swimming dice, a detailed rulebook, 32 waterproof plastic Challenge Cards featuring original humorous artwork, and 20 Action Cards that can strengthen your team or disrupt your opponents at exactly the right moment.

Four Strokes brings strategy, unpredictability, teamwork, and real racing into every practice. It transforms an ordinary swim set into something athletes want to win.
